Our Photo Journey

I Want to Find the Rapids

Perhaps sometimes it is not enough to just wait for time to pass in order to begin to heal the pain in our lives.

Maybe sometimes we have to kick, scratch and fight our way back out of the depths of depression. And maybe, we just have to decide that we have had enough and start living life again.

For me, it was a combination of things, but everything started with a simple promise to renew my passion for photography by finding a way to take one photo a day.

Funny how going back to doing the things we love can help us start to feel normal again, isn’t it?

What a difference one day can make in our lives.

I feel like I have been away, or maybe even asleep, for a very long time and suddenly there is a brand new world out there just waiting for me to explore it.

Listening to some folks chat tonight I realized that never again will I be satisfied with just floating down the peaceful stream of life.

I want to find the rapids.

A quotation by Peter Sage really says it all for me. “Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming Wow – what a Ride!”

Your photography is as beautiful as ever. Especially this particular shot.

It made me think of the wall climbing story from last year. So I had to go back and look at that photo and re-read the story. Did you go to the Watermelon Carnival again this year?

    Hi Cricket,
We don’t know each other, I’m just one of your many tremendously grateful students. I’ve watched you struggle & prayed daily for you both, wishing I could do more.

Never been where you are right now, but I know what it’s like to watch your child suffer. I’ve known every day for over 17 very long years. I would like to share only one thing with you: you have to CONSCIOUSLY CHOSE to “look up” and move forward!

It sounds like you’ve begun to do that, and I just wanted you to know that you are not alone. Many of us have had to chose to “look up” and begin to live again after watching our children suffer.

I won’t insult you by saying time will heal all; I WILL tell you from my own vast experience (you have no idea…) that you will both benefit so much more by fighting this awful thing with joy, laughter and love.

Like a smile, the more you practice it, the easier it becomes, too! Keep looking up and I’ll wave if you look my way.

Okay, I’m done. See you in class!

@Jenny – She is easy to photograph. The camera tends to love her. The Watermelon Carnival is coming up again very soon. We will definitely be there. It is a yearly mother daughter tradition for us. Besides, I love the funnel cakes at carnivals! 🙂

@Lauren – Thank you for your kind words. Slowly but surely, one step at a time, we will once again land on our feet running!
